December Teacher of the Month: Charizma Taylor

Each month, Marshall ISD celebrates the outstanding contributions of our campus faculty to the overall educational experience of our students. These professionals work countless extra hours at home, on weekends, and over holiday breaks with one focus in mind -- to make MISD and their campus Marshall Proud and Maverick Strong for our students.

The Teacher of the Month for December 2017 at Price T. Young Elementary School, as selected by Principal, Ms. Nakeisha Adams Pegues, is Charizma Taylor, fifth grade Math teacher.

"Ms. Taylor loves teaching math to her students," said Ms. Pegues in making her nomination. "Her classroom management is impeccable. Her students are consistently engaged in the learning. She makes the subject real for them. She relates to the students and is always trying to become better at what she is doing and teaching. She ask for input or help and is willing to do what is necessary for her students to see success. PTY is proud to call Mrs. Charizma Taylor our Teacher of the Month."

Hobbies/Things I like to do in my spare time: "Spending time with family and friends, and just relaxing doing what I want to do rather than what I know needs to be done."

What made you want to enter a career as a teacher?: "The desire to become a teacher came about after being a stay-at-home mom for two years taking care of my son due to his illness. As my son's health improved I knew I was ready to get back into the workforce. However, I needed something flexible with my time, so I became a substitute teacher. I wanted to be a cheerleader for all students, especially those that lack self confidence. It was always very rewarding to see the light bulbs come on and a huge smile while helping students understand something that he or she didn't know. "

What  do you see as your most important role as a teacher?: "To be the listening ear to students who in various ways cry out for help or attention and maybe need a voice, or just simply want to be heard. It is also very important for the opportunity to teach life lessons and the mere point of living. I'm a firm believer in right is right and wrong is wrong. I've showed a lot of tough love and it's all because I care and want my students to excel. As a teacher I feel it is my goal to teach and to aspire students to love themselves enough to never give up and always strive to be the best and do their best at everything they do. I also want them to understand that no one is perfect; it's okay to fail but learn from it and move forward. And, most of all, always be willing to help someone else along the way!"

Who were some of the most influential teachers/educators in your life?
"Mrs. Ketchum, Mrs. Rosborough, Mrs. Chatman, Mrs. Waskom, Mrs. Lambright and Mrs. Bayless...all for their passion fo teaching, knowledge, and personal relationships."

What do you enjoy the most about teaching specifically at Price T. Young? "The opportunity to serve the population of students we serve. The opportunity to teach and show them better and most of all help them to understand their worth and the potential to become just whoever and whatever they set their goal to accomplish."

What are some things you hope to accomplish in your career? Future plans?: "As I continue to grow in my career I'd like to become an accomplished teacher and later receive a masters degree in Counseling. To Ms. Adams Pegues, I am truly honored to be named Teacher of the Month! Also to Superintendent Dr. Gibson, former principals Mr. Segers, Mrs. Lister, Ms. Carreathers and Dr. Jennings, words can't express the gratitude I have for the opportunity to serve our students."
